1500 – 1540
Constructed by the O'Mahony family, the castle began as a modest stone fortress. It served as a vital stronghold for the local Kinvara community, blending defensive pragmatism with elegant architectural lines.
The Original Tower House
1641 – 1700
During the turbulent 17th century, Dunguaire became a focal point for resistance. The castle was used as a hideout for Jacobite sympathizers, leading to significant structural modifications and the addition of new defensive features.
The Jacobite Era
1800 – 1890
Following the Napoleonic Wars, the castle was acquired by the British government. It was meticulously restored in the Victorian era, transforming it into a grand public museum and a symbol of Galway's cultural heritage.
